Photographs of the Week – Mosques

Photograph of the Week, Photography — By on April 6, 2011 1:50 pm

This week the theme is mosques. Beautiful minarets, hauntingly magnificent at the adhan (call to prayer), powerful symbols of a powerful and often misunderstood faith. I started to visit mosques during my year in Jakarta (and learned that ear plugs are essential as the first call to prayer is around 4:30am), and have been captivated by their spiritual aura, lovely, intricately carved facades, and understated interiors ever since. My favourite mosques are the Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta, the largest in South East Asia, the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, the National Mosque in Kampala,  the Mohammad al-Amin Mosque in Beirut and the Mohammad Ali Mosque in Cairo.
